The longest of our four routes and, increasingly, a genuine relocation rather than a holiday house being fitted out. The NIF and the certificado de bagagem govern everything, and the vehicle waits on them rather than the other way round.
Who goes, from here
Retirement to the Algarve and the Silver Coast, still the largest group and still the one with the most furniture. Working moves to Lisbon and Porto, often with a family and a school term to fit around. And a growing number of households who have simply decided to leave — a whole house, sold, with nothing left behind in Pinner.
The route
The same start as the others: out of HA5 to the M25 and down to the crossing. Then the length of France to Bordeaux and across the border at Irún.
From there it is west across northern Spain for Porto and the north, or south through Salamanca for Lisbon, the Silver Coast and the Algarve. It is a long run, and the consolidation schedule matters as much as the distance on a shared load.
The paperwork, in order
These are the documents the file is built from. The ones only you can obtain are marked as such, and they are the ones to start first.
- NIF Yours The Portuguese tax number. Nothing else proceeds far without it, so it is the first thing to arrange.
- Address proof Yours A deed of purchase or a registered rental contract at the Portuguese address.
- Certificado de bagagem Yours The consular baggage certificate listing your household effects. It must match the inventory exactly.
- Proof of leaving the UK Yours Evidence that the Pinner address is being given up — a completion statement, or the end of a tenancy.
- Valued inventory, in Portuguese Us, signed by you Itemised and valued. The certificate and the inventory are read against each other, so they cannot diverge.

Delivering at the other end
Modern developments on the coast are easy — wide roads, parking, often a lift. Older village centres in the Alentejo and the interior are cobbled, narrow and sometimes stepped, and an inland quinta may be at the end of an unmade track.
Both mean a transfer to a smaller vehicle for the last stretch, which is an ordinary part of the plan when it is known in advance and a problem when it is not.
What relief does and does not cover
Portuguese relief on used household effects rests on genuinely taking up residence, and the certificado de bagagem is issued on exactly that basis. The inventory and the certificate are read against one another, so they have to agree.
Keeping the Pinner house and furnishing a place in the Algarve is an import rather than a relocation. It is perfectly legitimate — it simply has to be declared as what it is.

01 What is the NIF?
The número de identificação fiscal — the Portuguese tax number. Nothing much can be done without it: a lease, utilities, a bank account and the customs file all depend on it. Apply first.
02 What is the certificado de bagagem?
The baggage certificate issued by the Portuguese consulate, listing your household goods as accompanied personal effects. On this route it is the central document, and it has to match the inventory exactly.
03 How long is the drive?
It is the longest of our four routes: through France to Irún or the Basque border, then across northern Spain and south. The quotation sets out the expected window for your specific move — we do not publish day counts because route, consolidation and clearance all move them.
04 Is a shared load practical for Portugal?
Yes, and it is common for smaller households. Consolidated vehicles run the Iberian routes regularly. The trade is the same as anywhere: you fit around the schedule rather than setting it.
05 We are buying in the Algarve but keeping our Pinner house.
Then it is an import rather than a transfer of residence, and it should be declared that way. The Portuguese relief depends on genuinely taking up residence, and the certificado de bagagem is issued on that basis.
06 Can you deliver to a village in the Alentejo?
Yes, with the usual question answered first: can a loaded vehicle reach the door and turn once it is there? Cobbled village streets and unmade tracks both mean a transfer to a smaller vehicle, planned in advance.
